Macular Degeneration

As one ages, it’s of necessity one keep up with regular medical checkup, especially with the eyes. What we intend to discuss in this post could be maintained if detected early, but if discovered late, there could be no remedy. It could lead to blindness. The Eye A simple way to understand how the eyes works is thus: light rays from an objects hits the cornea (the window of the eyes), it’s been refracted to go through the lens which focuses it to the retina where it’s converted into electrical pulses and sent to the brain. The light of cause passes through the vitreous which is the gel substance that makes the eyes stay its shape, down to the back of the eyes where the retina is found. If one observe the back of the eyes from the figure above, one would discover a part of the eye close to the center of the retina oval in shape called the macular. The macular is responsible for the central, high resolution, color vision just to mention a few. If this is damaged, ones vision coul...

Electrolyte Imbalance

The body needs electricity to function properly. Electrolytes are mobile free ion that carries electric current in molten stage. From our little knowledge of the process of electrolysis, we know direct current is produced within electrode when they are connected in a solution having electrolyte which could either be a cation (positive charge) or anion (negative charge). Electrolysis is called a decomposition process, but we are not here to discuss electrolysis but to talk about electrolyte imbalance. Electric current is essential for the body to function and what provides this are called electrolytes. These ions include potassium, sodium, calcium, bicarbonate etc. This electrolytes interacts with the cells in the tissues, muscles, and nerves. Good fruits and vegetable could be a good source of this electrolyte. The balance of these electrolytes are of great essence because The symptoms of electrolyte imbalance can include twitching, weakness and, if unchecked, seizures and heart ...

Alkaline and Acidic food

Very interesting topic because many are talking about alkaline coffee or tea because of the controversy around the health hazard of of acidic food. Before we discuss this topic, we have to talk about acid and alkaline via the PH. The PH level which is used to measure the acidic or alkaline level of a substance, ranges from 0-14. Below 7 it is acidic but above 7 it's alkaline. Seven is the neutral level, the PH of distilled water. Just a quick reminder, the neutralization of acid and base (Alkaline) gives a salt and water, which water is exactly seven making it neutral. Speaking of food, we had discussed ulcer and many would be thinking our topic is  tailored towards food that causes ulcer, far from it. The digestive tract is built to be acidic. The tongue has a PH of around 6.5-7.5, the upper stomach is slightly acid the stomach is very acidic because we have hydrochloric acid that kill bacteria and help with the digestion process and the small intestine where food is been absorb...

Lead (Pb) Poisoning

But if it’s only money these leaders are after, they’ll self-destruct in no time. Lust for money brings trouble and nothing but trouble. Going down that path, some lose their footing in the faith completely and live to regret it bitterly ever after. (1 Tim 6:9-10 MSG)  Today happen to begin the holy week after palm Sunday yesterday. I just thought it wise to draw a lesson from the Holy Book that relates to what we want to discuss today which is birthed from industrialization, a quest towards making money. Lead is a chemical element with symbol Pb got from it's latin world plumbum. Its atomic number is 82, which belongs to the Metal family on the periodic table. Lead is an important part of industrialization. Product like (in the case of some country they use) leaded paint, leaded gasoline, leaded aviation fuel. Must of the majorly mined lead are used in lead-acid battery for motor vehicles. Some pipes used in delivering waters are made of lead. lead is also used in so...

The Stomach and Sleep

Have you noticed when one have issues with ones stomach (gastrointestinal (G.I) issues), one finds it difficult to sleep. They get so common that scientist labelled it: "chicken egg issues". If we may, we could discuss some issues: Hunger:  One common issues which one is likely to experience is hunger and sleep. When one sleeps, the body doesn't sleep, it works to repair the tissues and muscles for the body to do its functions. If we deprive ourselves of sleep, we crave for food. Which result us in taking junk food which result into GI issues. When the brain is not relax, it produces ghrelin (hunger hormones) while a relax mind produces leptin (hunger suppressing hormone). So if one is not sick,It would be helpful to get quality sleep at the right time. When you don't sleep you risk being obese and obese people wakes up from sleep for acid reflux or chest pain. GERD, Heartburn and Sleep: It is also worthy of note that one should avoid sleeping with his right sid...

Yogurt and Serendipity (Probiotic)

As one ages, one ceases to digest the sugar in milk (Lactose) any longer but diary product has been proven to increase longevity then came another diary product the body can digest called yogurt got by serendipity. It was accidentally discovered by the ancient way of storing milk in hot climate. Yogurt is a turkey word which means to thicken. It is agreed by historian that yogurt was accidentally discovered through the process of storing milking in hot climate because they discovered yogurt from Central Asian herdsmen who store extra goat milk in containers made out of animal stomach while they sojourn. They discovered this milk are still edible after it's being preserved for a long time and it thicken after going through a long time in hot sun. Nevertheless, yogurt are prepared by heating up diary product to 85C (185F). We have other myth that it was consumed by the accent Greek as the food of the gods and noted to increase longevity of life.  The reason was that yogurt contained...
