Alternative Health and Nigerian Government

 The practice of Traditional, complementary and Alternative medicine is taking a new turn with the Nigerian Government establishing a department for it out of the Government Ministry Department and Agencies (MDA). The department was approved by the head of Service in April 2018 and commences operation fully in July 2018. We could wish the department i.e. Tradition, Complementary and Alternative Medicine Department (TCAMD) a happy 5 years anniversary.


The department carries the vision of seeing the practice of Traditional, complementary and Alternative medicine in Nigeria become a respected mode of treatment. It seeks to preserve our cultural heritage with respectable practitioners and providers. It seeks to deliver quality healthcare to all Nigerians through its practice and benefiting from its economic potential.

The department is divided into four division which are: Traditional Medicine Practice (TMP), Complementary and Alternative Medicines Practice (CAMP),  Herbal product, complementary and Alternative medicines Production and commercialization (HCAM P&C), Traditional complementary and Alternative Medicines Research and Development. I would just say a few of the functions this divisions provides.

Tradional Medicine Practice (TMP): the traditional medicine day is always celebrated on the 16 day of August annually. This division of the department develops proper mechanism for the regulations of Traditional Medicine Practice in collaboration with Traditional complementary and Alternative medicine council of Nigeria (TCAMCN). It also collaborate with TCAMCN to provide training guideline of most countries Traditional Medical therapy. 

Complementary and Alternative Medicines Division: This division Develops, review and implements the National policies on complementary & Alternative Medicines healthcare services. It evaluate and monitors standards in TCAM hospitals in both private and public facilities on a regular bases.


Herbal Product, Complementary and Alternative Medicine Production and Commercialization:

It encourages local commercial production and marketing of standardized TCAM. Provides proper mechanism for registering Herbal, complementary and Alternative medicines product through liaising with with stakeholders, agency and fractions in the department.


Traditional, Complementary and Alternative Medicine Research and Development Programmes : 

Development, formulation, review and dissemination of Nigerian Herbal Pharmacopoeia. Development of National Compendium of Medicinal substances of natural origin, complementary and alternative therapies and its subsequent review.
